Abstract

Scleral allografts were performed in rabbits¢¥ eyes to observe the adapt-ability of scleral grafts. In this experiment 21 rabbits were used; one rabbit was for a donor and the rest 20 were for recipients. After lamellar scleral resection on recipient rabbit sclera, the defect was covered. by a same sized fresh full-thickness scleral allograft and this graft was covered again with recipient¢¥s conjunctiva. The rabbits were sacrified and the eyeballs were enucleated at intervals ranging from 1 week to 6 months after scleral allograft.
All the enucleated eyes were examined both grossly and histologically, and no alterations in collagen bundle architectures were found and the donor sclera grossly was well taken and graft rejection did not occur. Inflammatory reactions was observed of early stages of operation and this was subsided gradually and fibrous tissues surround the donor sclera at later stages. No intense granulomatous ¢¥reaction was observed at least 6 months.
